Projects: Past & Present
C.R.S Guatemala
The Father's Table Foundation has partnered with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the official international humanitarian agency of the U.S. Catholic community, for this project in the municipality of Tajumulco in southwestern Guatemala.
In Guatemala, children have very little access to education, especially in rural areas., This effectively limits employment opportunities as they grow older to small-scale agriculture and housekeeping, or forces migration to other parts of the country or to the United States where they often become locked into low-wage positions with little to no opportunity for advancement.
This project enables 160 impoverished students – primarily girls – from rural areas in Tajumulco (department of San Marcos), to continue their education at the primary, secondary and high school levels.* The project envisions activities that will help improve students' intellectual skills, increase their self-esteem, encourage them to be active participants in the development of their communities, and motivate parents to be more supportive of the academic process of their children.
The project will also form twenty "savings" groups, which encourages thrift and budget planning. There are now five such groups among the students and fifteen among their parents, with special emphasis on recruiting the students’ mothers. The Father's Table Foundation is funding this project through 2011.
* The education system in Guatemala consists of six years of primary school (first grade through sixth grade), three years of secondary school (seventh grade to ninth grade) and three years of high school (tenth grade to twelfth grade). While in high school, students can choose a career track to become a primary school teacher, an accountant, or a secretary. With a high-school diploma students are able to enter a university.
